Abstract

451,617. Refuse destructors &c. WOODALL-DUCKHAM (1920), Ltd., and REBER, J. W., 136, Victoria Street, Westminster. March 22, 1935, No. 8973. [Class 51 (i)] In burning refuse and like fuel in a furnace where the entire combustion process is effected on the one combustion grate, waste gases of reduced temperature are supplied above the grate and also, mixed with air, below the grate, with the result that maximum rate of combustion can be maintained without undue clinkering-up of the grate. As shown in Fig. 1, in which charging is intermittent, waste gases supplied at 10 are delivered above the grate and to the under-grate supply fan 7 under control of dampers 11a and 10a respectively. The application of the method to a continuous-feed destructor is also described, the grate 16a in this case being rotatable at intervals through 360‹, so that in passing from its normal working position, Fig. 3, clinker and ash are separated from the fuel mass, Fig. 6, to be dropped into a truck below as the grate again reaches its normal position. Optimum limits for the proportion of waste gas to air and for the waste gas composition are specified. The invention may be regarded as a development of that described in Specification 423,273 in which combustion carried out on the above lines is completed in a rotary furnace.
