Abstract

369,340. Feeding fuel to furnaces. ROGERS, W., 55, Upleatham Road, Saltburn-by-the-Sea. Feb. 14, 1931, No. 4738. [Class 51 (i).] A method of burning pulverized coal in a boiler furnace such as is normally used with coal firing and under normal boiler conditions of furnace temperature and furnace space, comprises burning the fuel in two stages at separate stations, first driving off the volatile constituents of the fuel in gas producing means along the length of which said constituents are directly burnt, and then burning the remainder of the fuel at another station. The furnace front 1, Fig. 1, is fitted with a row of three tubes 3, each of which has a portion projecting into the furnace.forming a gas producing device and being provided at the top with a slot 15 along which the gases are directly burnt. Each tube is continuously fed with fuel from a hopper 7 by means of a plunger 9 reciprocated in the outer portion of the tube by a crank 13. After the more volatile constituents have been driven off, the remaining fuel is expelled from the tube on to a grate 19 where combustion is completed. In order that a tube may be withdrawn while the boiler is in operation, the crank 13 of each tube is connected to the driving shaft by a clutch 25. A shutter 21 serves to close the opening left in the furnace wall. In a modification, Fig. 8, the plunger 9 is reciprocated by means of a cam 37 operating through a push rod 35 and a bell-crank lever 31 which is connected to the push rod and to the plunger by pin and slot connections. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 104,084*, [Class 51 (i), Furnaces and kilns, Combustion apparatus of].
