Abstract

418,726. Furnaces for burning refuse and low-grade fuel METALLGES. AKT.-GES., 45, Bockenheimer Anlage, Frankfort-on-Main, Germany. March 6, 1934, Nos. 7185 and 7186. Convention dates, May 20, 1933 and Aug. 1, 1933. [Class 51 (i).] A method of burning lowgrade fuel, especially refuse, consists in feeding it to a grate where it is ignited and during combustion is compressed or compacted in one or more operations before it has been converted into clinker, the free space resulting from compressing the fuel being filled with a fresh charge. Fig. 1 shows a furnace in which the method of combustion is carried out comprising a grate 2 with blast chambers 5, 6, 7 beneath. A pusher plate 3 is employed for compressing the fuel and for finally discharging clinker into a clinker pit 11 through the door 15. Doors 14 on the pit 11 permit the clinker to fall into a conveyer truck 19. Fig. 3 shows a modification in which the fuel is dried before being fed to the grate. Fuel is fed to the drying-chamber 33 where it is met by gases drawn from the furnace 22 and through perforated walls 34, 35 by a fan 42 which delivers the gases to the chamber 26 beneath the grate. The dried fuel is fed on to the grate 23 by a screw 44 and ram 46 and is consolidated by a ram 30. The clinker is discharged into a pit 31.
