Abstract

Grates; emission of hot gases through working openings, preventing.-In a furnace having a travelling grate, the rear part of which is subjected to forced draught and sealed off by a box arranged between the upper and lower runs of the grate from the front part, the entry of smoke or dust from the combustion chamber into the boiler-house is prevented by enclosing the front of the grate by a casing 7, Fig. 1, the space so enclosed being connected by a duct 8 to the suction inlet of the fan supplying air to the rear of the grate through the duct 6. A door 7<1> for gaining access to the grate is held closed by the actuating-crank 11 of the damper 9 in the duct 8 while the damper is open. A modification is shown in Fig. 2 in which the forced draught from a conduit 21 passes between adjustable plates 20 and exerts a suction effect on the chamber enclosed by the casing 7.
