Grates; emission of hot gases through working openings, preventing; ashes, &c., collecting and removing.-The invention described in the parent Specification is modified by dispensing with the means for enclosing the front part of the grate and by providing behind the fuel hopper 2, Fig. 1, a chamber 7 communicating by means of a duct 8 with the suction side of a fan or with a chimney or flue so that gases from the furnace are drawn off and their entry into the boilerhouse prevented. The suction action is increased by the provision of a plate 9 below the front end of the upper run of the grate and in front of the sealing-box 4 to prevent air from the boiler-house passing into the chamber 7. As shown in Fig. 2, the box 4 is provided with an opening 11 in the bottom through which dust from the rear part of the grate is drawn into the box and thence through piping 12 to a separator 13. In the modification shown in Fig. 3, the separator 13 is dispensed with and the box 4 is fitted with an internal nozzle 11' and functions as a separator. An opening 14 may be provided in the top of the box 4, which is also provided with an internal baffle 14, so that riddlings from the upper run of the grate may enter the box and be withdrawn through a suction opening 12<1> separate from ashes, &c., which are withdrawn through an opening 12<2>.
