T 1121'. whom it may concern Be it known that LFRnonRICK GAINES, a citizen of the United States, fiend a resident of Savaimah, county of Qhatham and State of Georgia, have inv cnted certain new and useful Improvements ,in Locomotive- Eoiler Farmers, of Which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in locomotive boilers and has special reference to improvements in the fire boxes, of locomotives.
The object of my invention is to provide a fire box construction particularly adapted for the burning of fuel0il wherein and whereby the etiiciency of the fire boxes and the economy of the fuel consumption shall bedncreesed; to provide a fire box in which the gases of combustion shall be effectively intermingled and mixed through whibh their flow shall be retarded to a certain extent to permit the completion of combustion, and to cause the gases to effectively deliver heat to and through the Walls of the fire box.
A further object of my inventioniis to provide a. locomotive boiler fire box particularly adapted for the combustion of fueloil, and which shall effectively baffle the direct flow of the gases of combustion from the ignition point to the fines and thus cause the gases to fiowover substantially all of the interior sur aoes of the fire box in their passa e to the Flues.

Aflifurther obycct of my invention is to enhence and increase the efiicicncy of loco motive lire boxes of the oil-burning type.
Further objects and features of my invention will appear herdinafter. My invention consists in a locomotive boiler fire box having a refractory chamber closing its lower end and which extends from the rear end of the fire box toward the forward end thereof, a transverse bafiie wall arranged within the fire box rising from the forward end of the refractory chemlxar and spaced rearwardly from the fine sheet, said chaimber being adapted to serve as e fuel-oil combustion chamber and the Wall serving to prevent the direct flow of the burning gases from the combustion chamber to the lines.
My invention further consists in a. fire box equipped as above stated, the bafile wall being provided ivith air inlet passages adapted to admit air into the fire box above the refractory combustion chamber whereby the efiiciency and economy of the fuel is enhanced.
A further obj ect of my invention is to provide a locomotive boiler fire box particularly adapted for burning fuel-oil and having an auxiliary chamber in direct communication with the fines and separated from the main combustion chamber by a. refractory wall, and means for admitting air to the gases of combustion between the main and the auxiliary combustion chambers.
My invention further consists in the sev eral arrangements and combinations of parts, and in the features of construction, by which the above and other objects are attained, and all as hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims My invention will be more readily understood by reference to the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification and in which:

A locomotive boiler fire box, closed at its lower end and having a refractory combustion chamber in the rear part thereof, the forward wail of said combustion chamber being spaced rearwardly from the flue sheet and provided with a burner opening, a refractory cross wall rising within the fire box above said burner opening and provided at its upper edge with a rearwardly projected ledge or coping and having oval air passages rising within the wall ending in flared air 0 enin s positioned to disehargfi heated air t roug the rear face of the we below said ledge or coping.
