Steam-generator furnaces; fuel supports; smoke, consuming.-A boiler has an inclined perforated ignition plate 171 on which the fuel from the hopper 16 is coked. As applied to a Stirling boiler with a chain grate stoker, an air box 19 with an inclined perforated plate 171 is connected by a pipe to a duct 24 leading to a space over the combustion chamber, a duct 25 leading to the back of the boiler, and a duct 26 leading to the flue. By suitably regulating the dampers a current of gas is drawn from the combustion chamber through the fuel on the plate 171 so that the fuel before reaching the grate is coked and the gaseous products are led back to the boiler or to the flue. In a modification for a boiler with forced draught the suction side of the fan is connected to the air box 19.
