Smoke-consuming.-Smoke from a furnace is consumed by passing it through a constricted passage where it is subjected to the action of a flame extending longitudinally of the passage and occupying the whole sectional area thereof, a stream of gas or air being admitted to the passage to support combustion. The flame may be produced by liquid or gaseous fuel or by an electric arc. Fig. 1 shows the invention applied to a boiler furnace the heat generated by burning the smoke being utilized. The smoke from the furnace 14 passes through a flue 17 into the smoke-box 2 and thence into a tube 1 traversing the boiler 3 where it is subjected to the action of the flame from a gas burner 5 and to air from a nozzle 6 supplied from a pipe 7 and fan 8 which also delivers air through a pipe 10 to the ashpit. The pipe 10 is provided with a rotatable elbow 11 which may be turned to discharge ashes accumulated therein. A modification is shown in Fig. 2 in which the smoke passes from the smoke-box 23 to a pipe 22 leading into the forced draught pipe 10 so as to deliver the smoke with air to the ash-pit from which part may be led direct to the fire and the remainder through a valve controlled pipe 24 to the end of a smokeconsuming pipe 20 where it is subjected to the flame from the burner 21 and air from the pipe 7 leading direct from the fan 8.
