683,537. Boiler furnaces. BENNIS COMBUSTION, Ltd., PAGE, R. B., and SMITH, E. Oct. 19, 1950 [Oct. 19, 1949], No. 26800/49. Class 51 (i). A boiler furnace of the type having a refractory arch over the front portion of a travelling or reciprocating fire grate and a smoke box which may be either at the front or the rear of the furnace, is characterised by the provision of a passage 15, through the arch 11, leading from the region above the front of the grate through a duct 16 to the smoke box 13, a control damper 17 disposed in said duct between the arch passage and the smoke box and a damper-controlled secondary-air inlet 16a in the duct. In operation damper 17 is opened and damper 18 closed, in which case hot gases are drawn through the passage 15 to the smoke box, or, alternatively, damper 17 is closed and damper 18 opened, secondary air then being admitted through the passage 15 to the combustion chamber.
