Convention date, Jan. 3. [Class 51 (i)] In a method of operating a travelling grate furnace, flue gases are extracted from one end of the combustion chamber through nozzles 9 in the front wall and are mixed in a header 8 with air from an inlet 10 and blown directly into the other end of the chamber through nozzles 13 in the rear wall. The circulating fan 6 is provided with an air intake 16 and an additional delivery pipe 15 so that air may be blown in from both sets of nozzles to flush and front and rear walls of the chamber. Fuel is fed to the grate 2 from a hopper 3 under the control of a regulating slide 4.
