Abstract
975,848. Travelling grate furnaces. JOHN THOMPSON (TRIUMPH STOKER) Ltd. May 14, 1963 [May 23, 1962], No. 19820/62. Heading F4B. In a down-draught system for heating incoming fuel on a travelling, grate stoker, a bottomless chamber 1 and a rear parallel chamber 16 are located transversely between the upper and lower travel paths of the grate 6. Hot'gases are drawn through the fuel bed 17 via an opening 9, past a baffle 11 and through an opening 10 into the chamber 1 connected at one or both ends by a duct 19 containing a damper 22 to the suction inlet of a fan 20 which delivers air under pressure through a duct 21 to one or both ends of the chamber 16 and thence out through its open rear and up through the fuel bed. The gaps between the front and rear walls of the chamber 1 and the lower travel of the grate 6 are sealed by flexible material or hinged flaps trailing on the grate 6 such as to allow the grate to clear the chamber 1 of deposits automatically without impeding its motion.
