Abstract
A furnace comprises a fuel-firing unit (21), fuel supply means (7, 23, 24) for supplying fuel at a controlled rate to said fuel-firing unit, a fresh air duct (14) for supplying a stream of fresh air to said fuel-firing unit, a flue (15) for withdrawing flue gases from said fuel- firing unit, a blower (20) for producing said stream of fresh air, and a by-pass valve (32) for withdrawing fresh air from said stream before it reaches said fuel-firing unit. In order to protect said blower from elevated temperatures and to permit of an efficient operation of said furnace at different fuel-burning rates, the blower is incorporated in the fresh-air duct and adapted to deliver said stream of fresh air to said fuel- firing unit and said by-pass valve is connected to withdraw fresh air from said stream between the delivery side of said blower and said fuel-firing unit. <IMAGE>
