Abstract

A method and apparatus for heating molten glass accumulated in an elongate channel furnace comprises heating the molten glass to maintain a substantially uniform temperature throughout the furnace, by the use of burners (10) adapted to direct a stream of hot combustion products into the space above molten glass in the furnace and hot combustion products in that space are discharged through the exhaust passages (14) of each such burner (10) whereby the combustion air fed through a passage 12 to the head (16) of each burner (10) is heated by heat-exchange with the adjacent hot exhaust gas flow. The burners are mounted in a side wall above the level of the melt, and additional burners may be used. <IMAGE>
