Abstract

10,305. Dunnachie, W. J. Dec. 2. Producers; tar; gas retorts.- Gas is drawn from the hotter regions of gas-producers, retorts, coke ovens, &c., immediately treated with steam or water, or both, and in some cases a small quantity of air for the purpose of converting the cyanogen into ammonia. The loss of heat sustained by the gas extraction may be made good by introducing excess of combustible material with the charge, or by the introduction of superheated gas above the level of the point of extraction. In one construction, the gas is immediately treated in the mixer w, Fig. 2, with steam and water spray at the points C, W. The chequered brickwork with which the chamber is filled serves to mix the gases, while the stream of water, which runs down the brickwork, takes up the potash and soda. A brick arch may be fitted in front of the inlet pipe, and arranged to dip under the water in the mixer. In another construction, shown in Fig. 3, the gases meet steam and water- Spray at the point W, and are forced under the serrated edges of baffle-plates B. The potash and soda are taken up by the water. The ammonia in the gases is absorbed in sulphuric acid, and the purified gases are put to various-uses or returned to the furnace. The invention may be applied to a gas-producer of the blast-furnace type burning small coal, shale, lignite, peat, waste from collieries, &c. Part of the gas is withdrawn through openings p, and treated as described above for the removal of alkalis and production of ammonia. Steam is blown in through tuyÞres k, and the gases that leave the top of the furnace added to those that have been previously withdrawn, and before use treated for the removal of tar and ammonia.
