563,037. Carbonising process and apparatus. SHAWINIGAN CHEMICALS, Ltd. Jan. 26, 1943, No. 1299. Convention date, July 16, 1942. [Class 55 (i)] The material to be carbonised is fed from a hopper 16 and passed in a thin layer on a travelling grate 12 through a heating chamber 8 in which a portion of the volatile constituents is burned in a controlled amount of air passed upwardly through the charge from compartments 30-30e, the air supply to the separate zones through pipes 40 being controlled by valves 42 according to the amount of volatiles given off in the respective zones. The air is supplied by a blower 51 and supply box 50, and each air duct includes a venturi meter 41 and is provided with a pipe 44 leading to an indicator 45, the air supply being adjusted so that in the earlier heating stages combustion takes place in the upper part of the bed and above the bed the combustion working downwards as any given portion of the bed progresses until finally it reaches the lower strata, combustion of the fixed carbon being substantially avoided by limiting the air supply. Unburned volatiles pass out through a flue 11 to be burned for providing heat or to be cooled and collected, and coke is discharged through a conduit 19. Specification 533,988 is referred to.
