Abstract
473,188. Coking processes and apparatus. WALLACE, G. W. April 3, 1936, No. 9840. [Class 55 (i)] Solid carbonaceous materials such as coal, oil shale, lignite or cannel coal are carbonized on a perforated conveyer or chain grate 5 which travels through a chamber 1 supplied with hot combustion products from inlets or burners 6, these hot gases passing downwardly through the charge, and the gases and distillates being collected in a duct 14 leading to an outlet. Dampers 10 in the grate support control the amount of hot gases passing through various parts of the charge, and the degree of drying and subsequent carbonization to which the charge is subjected. The coke or residue falls into a bin 15 in which it is cooled by the admission of gas or steam through inlet 17, and is discharged through valve 16. The thickness of the charge layer varies from 6 to 24 inches dependent upon the size and nature of the material, and the temperature of the heating gases is controlled by the amount of gas used, usually in excess, in proportion to the quantity of air in the burners. The temperature may be controlled by passing the coke cooling gas introduced through pipe 17 into the carbonization chamber where it dilutes the hot combustion gases. The chain grate is cooled in its passage through a chamber external to the heating chamber 9, this cooling being assisted, if desired, by circulation of cooling gases.
