Furnaces with coking-chambers; fuel, heating; gaseous-fuel fittings.-A process and apparatus for the combustion of fuel in furnaces with the recovery of by-products consists in supplying the fuel to the furnace through one or more coking- chambers arranged entirely within the furnace, the fuel being coked and gasified by the externally applied furnace heat and also by drawing combustion products through the coking-chambers. The coke is fed on from the coking-chambers to the furnace grate and the gases withdrawn are returned after recovery of the by-products to the furnace. Fig. 1 shows a furnace in which fuel is fed through pipes such as 2 on to a travelling grate 1, the furnace gases being directed over the pipes by a bridge wall 5. Gases are exhausted from the pipes 2 by a fan 6. Instead of a travelling grate, a stepped grate may be employed. Fig. 4 shows a modification in which the fuel is fed on to a flat grate through vertical passages 2 with flues 7 at the sides delivering the combustion products through openings 8 to the furnace chamber.
