[Classes 51 (i) and 55 (i)] In a combined steam generator and gas producer plant a part or the whole of the coal, prior to entering the furnace of the steam generator, is subjected to a temperature of from about 300‹ to 500‹C. to distil off gaseous products, which may be led to the gas producer, and is then partly burnt on the furnace grate and delivered to the gas producer the gas from which may be burnt in the furnace or utilized for driving a gas engine. As shown, fuel is fed from a hopper 11 on to a travelling grate 9 the front portion of which is arranged in a distillation chamber 28 where it is subjected to the heat of furnace gases led from the furnace chamber by a conduit 25. The distillates and other gases are led through a conduit 29 to the gas producer 13 and the fuel on the grate after being partly burnt is delivered to the producer which may be of the kind described in Specification 579,967. The steam generator may be of the water-tube type with water tubes 23 connected to a drum 24 restricting the passage between the chamber 28 and furnace chamber. Steam or gas may be delivered by nozzles 32 to prevent the passage of furnace gases into the distillation chamber. Specifications 581,680 and 581,681, [both in Group XXVI], also are referred to.
