Abstract
751,984. Furnaces; coking apparatus. BABCOCK & WILCOX, Ltd. Feb. 19, 1954 [Feb. 20, 1953], No. 4988/54. Classes 51(1) and 55(1). In the combustion of fuel having a high percentage of volatiles, the fuel is first subjected to a partial carbonisation and the resulting coke and gas, mixed with the requisite combustion air, are supplied separately to a slag tap furnace. As shown in Fig. 2, dry pulverised coal is fed from a hopper 41 by a feeder 42 to a vertical retort 43, the latter being externally heated at its upper part by hot gases from a cyclone furnace 1 supplied at 54 and the coke produced being cooled in the lower part by air supplied to a jacket 46, the air thus heated being delivered through a duct 49 to a tangential inlet 50 in the furnace 1. The inlet 50 is disposed between an inlet 52, to which the gas generated in the retort passes through a valvecontrolled pipe 45, and an inlet 51 to which the coke discharged from the retort at 47 is fed by a stream of air supplied to the duct 48. In a modified arrangement shown in Fig. 1 as applied to a steam generator plant, the cyclone furnace 1 delivers into a secondary furnace chamber 3, secondary air and the air-borne coke being supplied to the former at 38, 39 respectively and the gas to the latter at 40.
