Abstract
192,743. Tully, C. B. Oct. 12, 1921. Producers.-In complete gasification apparatus in which a retort for the production of coal gas is heated by a jacket surrounding it by the blow gases from a water gas producer situated below it, the coal gas is cracked within the apparatus itself either by passage through the jacket or through the fuel bed of the producer. Means are adapted whereby the retort gas is not subjected to too high a temperature so as produce a gas having a high calorific value. During an up-run of the producer a coal gas from the retort b is passed through nostrils i<1> into the jacket d previously heated by the blow gas, the water gas entering the jacket through nostrils i below the retort nostrils. Steam is simultaneously admitted to the jacket by the pipe m and passage n. By this means the coal gas does not enter the fuel bed of the producer and become unduly heated. The mixed gases are withdrawn by an outlet communicating with the jacket through an annular channel r and pass through a wash-box with controlling valves constructed as in Specification 112,091. During the down-run steam is admitted to the top of the jacket by a pipe t and passes together with the coal gas from the retort through the fuel bed the mixed gases being withdrawn at the bottom. The producer is then blown again with air but the previous admission of steam to the jacket prevents it being raised to too high a temperature. during its use as a fixing chamber. A part only of the blow gases may be burned in the jacket with secondary air, or the supply of air may be limited or part of the blow gases may be drawn off from the upper part of the producer to prevent them entering the jacket. If gas rich in hydrogen is required the nostrils i' are not used the coal gas passing through the fuel bed and entering the jacket through the nostrils i with the water gas. A scouring fluid such as steam may be passed through the retort through a pipe at u at the termination of each down-run, and steam may be introduced into the retort during each up-or-down run. Oil or tar may be injected into the retort or fuel bed. The retort used may be constructed in the manner described' in Specification 192,880.
