Abstract

171,884. Wells, J. F. Nov. 3, 1920. Producers; coking processes.-In a gas-producer, the incandescent zone in which the fuel is oxidized to carbon dioxide is separated from the transformation zone in which the carbon dioxide is transformed to carbon monoxide, the hot gases from the incandescent zone in which solid, liquid, or gaseous fuel may be burned being passed through a shallow fuel bed in the transformation zone. Fuel is burned in the zone or compartment e in a blast of air from a pipe d and the hot combustion products pass around the fuel in the zone g heating the same and escaping through an outlet m, which is closed when the zone g is at a red heat. The gases generated when the combustion products are passed through the transformation zone are drawn through a grate h and outlet i. An auxiliary supply of air is admitted at j and liquid fuel may be injected through ports k. Fuel is supplied from a hopper n controlled by a flap valve r. Bituminous fuel, wood, or straw may be used instead of dry fuel such as coke or charcoal and the producer worked to obtain charcoal or coke as a product.
