Abstract

380,074. Low-temperature carbonization; charging and discharging. PAMART, C., Bruay - en - Artois, Pas - de - Calais, France.-(Assignee of Compagnie des Mines de Bruay; Pas-de-Calais, France.) April 8, 1931, No. 10387. Convention date, April 23, 1930. Addition to 268,613 and 331,497, [both in Class 55 (i), Coking &c.]. [Classes 51 (ii) and 55 (i).] In an apparatus for the low-temperature carbonization of fuel in the form of agglutinating dust in which the fuel is passed through a preheating retort, an oxidizing apparatus, and a carbonizing retort as described in the parent Specifications, the oxidizing apparatus is mounted inside the rotary preheating retort, and the oxidizing air passes through it in a direction reverse to that of the material treated. The powdered fuel from a hopper 29 is fed through a mechanically-operated valve 16 to a rotary preheating retort 1, through the annular space of which it passes and is fed by blades 22 into an oxidizing tube 21 having vanes 37 which convey the fuel to a discharge conduit 31. The oxidized fuel is passed by a screw conveyer 20 into a rotary carbonizing retort 2 containing steel balls 9 retained by a grating 10. The powdered residue falls into a channel 44, and is evacuated by a distributer 54 on to conveyers 46, 47. The oxidizing air is drawn by a fan 19c through an opening 33, and in countercurrent to the charge in the tube 21, the air, which carries coal dust in suspension, passing into a separator 36 from which the dust is fed to the screw 20 and retort 2. Conduits 77, 78 remove the condensed water from the air. When, during starting, the coal is insufficiently oxidized, it may be discharged through a damper 74 and conduit 75 on to a conveyer 76. Distillates pass through a pipe 49 into a separator 50, the coke dust from which drops down to the distributer 45, and the gases and vapours rise through a vertical shaft, and enter a branch 51 in which they are sprayed with water from an injector 53, before they reach a drum 52 and main 48. Scrapers 54 .. 57 are provided in the separator and condenser. Counterweighted valves 39, 40 are provided which only open when sufficient fuel collects above them. The distributer 45 operates only if the level of the semi-coke in the channel 44 rises to an amount determined by a counterweight 70, Fig. 4, which rests on the surface. A link 66 from one of the retort-carrying rollers 6a oscillates a lever 67, which by link and lever 68, 69 reciprocates the counterweight 70. When the semicoke rises in the channel 44, the counterweight 70 is stopped, and the pawl 71, which is attached to the bar 68, engages with the ratchet wheel operating the distributer 45. A fuel supply valve 16 is operated by an eccentric or shaft 60, and a link 62, Fig. 3, the end of which is mounted in a slide block which is moved by a crank 65 along a lever 63 to alter the position of the link from 62a to 62b, and vary the movement of a ratchet wheel operating the valve 16.
