[Class 55 (ii).] A carbonizing chamber or retort a has a bottom gas outlet b communicating with a foul main c, a liquid seal being provided by a cup valve d which may be swung out of engagement with the dip-pipe g. This valve may be raised or lowered to increase or decrease the seal of the carbonizing chamber. The valve may be operated by hand, and may be filled with liquid either by a pipe e, or by swinging it downwards through the liquid in the main c.
