Retorts a are provided with an upper gas offtake b connected to an upper foul main g and a lower off-take c connected to a lower foul main e, the bottom off-take being normally closed, and opened at a predetermined gas pressure within the chamber. Up-takes f connect the two foul mains, the lower off-take entering a liquid seal d. Liquor can be sprayed into the up-takes f either at l or m for the purpose of maintaining the liquor level in the lower main e. Bye-pass pipes are provided for passing the liquor should any of the up-take valves h be closed.
