Abstract
420,124. Coke ovens. TOTZEK, F., 142, Am Muhlenbach, Essen, Germany. Feb. 14, 1934, No. 4921. [Classes 51 (ii) and 55 (i)] The heating walls 4 of a coke oven are built up of a single layer of bricks which have horizontal grooves or recesses 17 connected by vertical grooves 18 which lead at their upper ends 20 into the gas collecting space over the charge in the oven 1. Distillation gases which penetrate the walls at the lower part of the oven chamber are led by two passages 17, 18 into the gas collecting space, thus preventing escape of distillates. When working at medium temperatures the thickness of the bricks may be increased to 130 or 150 m.m., and the temperature of the heating flues must accordingly be increased to a temperature which promotes the deposition of graphite and automatic packing of the masonry joints.
