[Class 51 (ii)] , In a vertical retort setting in which the adjacent walls e, f of two contiguous retort chambers a, b are tied by horizontal tiles g which extend from the inner faces of the walls e, f across the intervening heating-flue space o, the tiles are formed with shoulders l which cover the joints at the top and bottom of the tiles and one or more courses m, of these tiles are carried directly on the metal frameworks d at the base of the setting to support the bottom brickwork courses n. The undersides of the tiles g and the inner faces of the wall bricks e, f are hollowed out as shown at p, q, Fig. 2, in order to increase the cross-sectional area of the horizontal heating flues o. To provide communication between adjacent flues o, a space r is left in each horizontal row of tiles g, the wall bricks s at this point having projections t which cover the joints in the same manner as the shoulders l.
