A horizontal by-product coke oven is provided with a coking chamber extending therethrough having flued side walls each comprising a plurality of superimposed courses of bricks, which latter are so formed that the horizontallyextending joints between successive courses on the chamber side of the walls will be sinuous lengthwise of the walls to reduce cutting out of the horizontal joints by coke being pushed out of the chamber and also to restrain relative movement of the courses lengthwise of said wall. A side wall 3 of a coking chamber is formed of interlocking bricks having both their upper and lower faces divided lengthwise into two staggered sinuous bands having alternate ribs 6 and recesses 7, the inner ends of the ribs forming vertical shoulders 14 which engage corresponding shoulders of adjacent courses to prevent outward or inward movement of the bricks. Rectangular projections extending from some of the side wall bricks may form part of transverse walls 4, Fig. 2, of heating flues 2. Bricks 10 forming these transverse walls 4 and the projections 9 may be provided with transverse tongues 12 and grooves 13. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91, comprises also the subject-matter of Specification 676,754. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
