593,430. Coke ovens and furnaces. SOC. DE TECHNIQUE INDUSTRIELLE. Feb. 14,1945, No. 3742. Convention date, Jan. 14, 1942. [Classes 51 (ii) and 55 (i)] In a coke oven or furnace the heating walls forming the coking or like chamber are formed of units built up of silica or other refractory bricks, each unit containing one or more heating flues, the units being separated from one another by expansion joints extending transversely of the wall and so dimensioned as to close at the working temperature of the oven. As shown in Fig. 2, the units 1 are separated by expansion joints 5 and are held in place in the lower part 3 of the oven by means of a tenon 1a and are similarly held in the upper part 4, the upper and lower parts of the oven being made of silicoaluminous material. The units are formed with a central web, which provides two flue passages 2, 2 which are connected by an upper horizontal conduit 2a. The upper part of the oven may be formed as a direct extension of the unit members, in which case it will be formed of silica bricks. The expansion joint 5 between the units may be formed as in Fig. 5 with engaging projections and recesses on adjacent bricks of adjacent units to avoid any horizontal or vertical displacement of the units with respect to each other. The inner faces of the bricks may be formed with projections 15, Fig. 8, providing a staggered path for the heating gases. The height of the division wall 16, Fig. 10, between the heating flues may be adjusted by superimposing bricks 19 upon it, the ends of these bricks being held between ribs 18 on the side walls.
