236,409. Brooke, R. M. Aug. 26, 1924. Retort furnaces.-In horizontal retort settings the inner stay walls D are independent of the brickwork supporting the retorts A, B, C, and are formed with steps G at the levels of the converging upper tiers of retorts. Expansion spaces F are left between the shoulders G and the part of the setting carrying the retorts or, as shown in the upper part of the Figure, between the shoulders G and inclined blocks E arranged to rest against the inner stay walls and the crowns of the retorts.
