Abstract

320,448. Drakes, Ltd., and Drake, J. W. Aug. 4, 1928. Retort furnaces.-In a vertical retort setting of the kind described in Specification 8524/13 part only of the gas is admitted to the uppermost of the combustion chambers surrounding the retort while the remainder is admitted at a lower level. In the construction shown gas is supplied through the vertical flue 2 having ports g, g<1> leading respectively to the top and the third combustion chamber down. Air can be admitted at various levels through damper-controlled flues h<1>, while the combustion products pass downwards through the setting and are withdrawn at the base through the flues k. The second supply of gas is preferably admitted at about one third the height of the retort from the top, and the upper supply is so controlled that active distillation does not begin until the charge reaches the level of the lower supply.
