Abstract

222,987. Cummins, F. B. July 20,1923. Retort furnaces.-A horizontal or mclined gas retort setting is provided with supplomentary air inlets at the top of the retort chamber for supporting combustion of the burning gases passing through the retort chamber, the arrangement being such that the burning gases draw therethrough supplementary air into the retort chamber as they travel along their paths. Fig. 1 shows a front sectional elevation, Fig. 2 shows a side sectional elevation, and Fig. 4 shows a sectional plan on the line D-D of Fig. 1 of a retort chamber. The setting is divided to the ground level by a central wall 1, and is further subdivided by partitions 12 into narrow chambers having supplementary air inlets 39 at the top. Parallel waste gas passages 3, 4 extend from the back to the middle wall 1, beneath the level of the lowest retorts 2, and communicate with the waste gas main flue 21. Producer gas from a producer 22 is supplied to gas passages 7 - - 10, Fig. 4; passage 7 communicates through a hole in the wall 1 with passage 9, and passage 8 communicates similarly with passage 10. Secondary air is supplied to conduits 30, 31, Fig. 1, adjacent to the gas conduits 7, 8 from air inlets 27, 28, which are controlled by dampers. Each narrow chamber is supplied with gas and air from the gas and air conduits 8, 31 respectively through holes 14 and 37, and the burning gases travel up one side of each row of retorts 2 and down the middle, as indicated by the arrows. When the gases pass over the top of each outside row of retorts, supplementary air for further supporting combustion is drawn in through ports 39, these ports being supplied with air from damper-controlled inlets 40, 41, Fig. 1, the air ascending through passages 44, 45 containing baffles formed in the setting. The waste gases from the narrow chambers of the front half of the setting pass through ports 15 to the upper half of the waste-gas passage 4, Fig. 2, whence they travel horizontally to the left-hand end, where they pass down through an opening in the horizontal dividing wall 17 to the lower half of the waste-gas passage 4. Then they travel horizontally along the lower half of the passage 4 towards the centre wall 1, and finally pass through passages 56 to the main waste-gas flue 21. The waste gases from the chambers on the other half of the setting similarly pass through passages 5 and 6 and through passaged 56 to the flue 21.
