Abstract
531,644. Retort furnaces. GIBBONS BROS., Ltd., and FARROR, R. M. July 26, 1939, No. 21767. [Class 51 (ii)] In a retort setting of the kind in which the retorts are arranged horizontally in vertical spaced banks in a chamber subdivided by partitions into a number of combustion chambers to which gas and air are admitted and the combustion products ascend vertically between the vertical banks of retorts and then pass down flues on the outsides of the banks of retorts to a regenerator, the retorts in each bank are in contact or spaced apart a small distance and are oblong in crosssection with their longer dimension vertical, the ratio of the longer dimension to the shorter dimension being approximately between 3:1 and 3:2. The sides of the banks present surfaces free from deep pockets and the gases are arranged to recirculate in the manner described in Specification 436,960. Fig. 1, shows a retort setting in which the oblong retorts 4 are arranged in three vertical banks with combustion chambers 7, 8 to which gas and secondary air are admitted through ports 13, 14, 16, 17. The gases re-circulate by return passages 18, 19.
