Retort furnaces; discharging. - An apparatus for use in gas manufacture comprises an upwardly-tapering vertical retort 10 of rectangular cross-section surrounded by heating-flues 19 formed by horizontal partitions having openings alternately at opposite sides, the lowermost flues being in communication with a water-gas generator 12, into which the coke from the retort passes. Burners 53 provide an auxiliary or alternative means for heating the retort. The generator communicates with the heating-flues through a dampered passage 15 between a partition 14 and an outer wall of the setting; and an off-take 54 is provided so that the gases produced on the air run of the generator can be passed to a boiler and the stack instead of through the heating-flues. The ash-discharger of the generator consists of toothed discs mounted on parallel shafts, which can be rotated mechanically or from a hand-wheel 18. Cleaning-openings are provided in connection with the heating-flues.
