372,387. Retort settings. RISBY, H. J., 2, Erlanger Road, New Cross, London, and DEMPSTER & SONS, Ltd., R., Rose Mount Iron Works, Elland, Yorkshire. Jan. 8, 1931, No. 669. [Class 51 (ii).] In a setting for horizontal or inclined gas retorts in which the whole of the fuel gas is admitted to a central combustion zone between the tiers of retorts, the combustion of the gas is effected in multiple stages. As shown, gas from a producer is supplied through ports 5 at the bottom of the combustion chamber 6 between two tiers of retorts 18, and is burnt with a limited quantity of air supplied from recuperators 2 through ports 4 adjacent the gas ports, combustion being completed by a further supply of air delivered at the top of the setting through ports 9. The air delivered through the ports 9 may be drawn from the usual recuperators, from air-heating passages in the walls of the setting, or from an additional recuperator fitted in the roof. Shields 16 are fitted to protect the retorts adjacent the ports 9 from direct impingement of the flames.
