Bricks, special shapes of.-In a suspended furnace arch, of the kind comprising rows of bricks having inverted T-shaped channels B, C in which engage supporting bars D, the bricks are provided with passages E leading from the channels B to the underside of the arch so that air, under natural or forced draught, may pass from above the arch into the combustion chanber, thus cooling the bars D and forming a protecting layer immediately below the bricks. The passages E may be constituted either by holes formed in the body of each brick or, as shown, by coincident grooves in the end faces of adjacent bricks. The arch-supporting blocks at the upper ends of the side walls of the furnace are formed with a cut-away portion to allow air to enter the channels B.
