Abstract

Bricks, special shapes of.-A flat arch for boiler and other furnaces is built up of a single course of bricks 7, 7<1>, 9, Fig. 1, the bricks 7 being provided with recesses 6 engaging with rails 4 secured by pin-and-slot connections 5 to slings 3 capable of sliding on beams 1. Feather and groove or like connections are also provided in the bricks 7. Wedge-shape bricks 9 are interposed between the pairs of bricks 7. The terminal bricks 7<1> are each formed with a recess 6<1> to engage with a rail 4. The supporting means described above permit movement of the recessed bricks in any horizontal direction. Fig. 3 shows a modification in which recesses 10 on the bricks 7 engage with tongues 11 adapted to slide on the rails 4. The adjoining faces 12 of the bricks 7 are convex and concave. Fig. 4 shows a further modification in which the wedge-shape bricks 9 are formed with notches 13 for engagement by a tool to effect their removal, clearance spaces preferably filled with asbestos being provided at 14 to permit insertion of the tool.
