440,009. Coke ovens. KOPPERS GES., H., 29, Moltkestrasse, Essen, Germany. April 1, 1935, No. 10122. Convention date, March 31, 1934. [Class 51 (ii)] In a coke oven having regenerators 6 disposed beneath the coking chambers 1, the upper part of the oven brickwork which contains the heating walls 5 is constructed of silica brick and the lower part, including the chamber floor 11, of fireclay. To provide adequate support for the lower fireclay brickwork during the period when its expansion is less than that of the upper part, there are provided auxiliary buckstays 16 resiliently and adjustably mounted by means of screws 20 and springs 21 on the main buckstays 13. Damage to the chamber floor 11 during the period of differential expansion is prevented by a box-like reinforcement 26 which. is formed with apertures 22 to permit, during heating up; the insertion, in the usual rich gas passages 23, of tie-rods 24 fitted with springs 25 bearing on the reinforcement 26. When the oven has attained a temperature of 400 to 500‹ C. the silica and fireclay have approximately the same expansion and the tie-rods 24 are then removed.
