Abstract

477,656. Regenerative coke ovens. GROVES, W. W. (Otto & Co., Ges., Dr. C.) Dec. 17, 1936, No. 34697. [Class 51 (i)] In a regenerative coke oven having the masonry of the regenerators and their distributing flues built wholly or mostly of crystalline silica or quartz which on burning contains the quartz modifications cristobalite and tridymite, those parts of the masonry, such as the regenerator sole flues and the lower parts of the regenerator walls, liable to attain temperatures which fluctuate through the transformation values of the quartz modifications are provided with a lining of such thickness and capacity for heat insulation that the temperature of the silica masonry is maintained above the transformation temperatures of the quartz modifications and which is made of a material which is insensitive to variations in temperature between 0 and 400‹ C. The Figure shows a coke oven with the regenerator sole flues g, h and the lower parts of the regenerator walls lined at t as stated above. A suitable lining material is formed of a mixture of grog, argillaceous material and coke, moulded, dried, and burnt at a temperature of 1250 to 1300‹ C.
