Abstract
A refractory material is prepared from a substantially pure alumina-silica compound, e.g. Kaolin, by melting it, without the addition of a fluxing material, by burning a carbonaceous fuel in contact therewith, the product having a fusion point above 1370 DEG C. and a devitrification point above 815 DEG C. The product, which p may contain 0.05 - 1.0 per cent of carbon, is manufactured by first baking the alumina-silica compound to drive off combined water and charging it with alternate layers of coke, preferably in the ratio of 1 1/2 : 1, into a cupola (see Group XII). The molten material discharging from the taphole may meet a blast of air or steam to form rock-wool, or may be solidified, as by quenching or casting, ground, mixed with clay and water, dried, and fired. The material may be used in the manufacture of refractory bricks or filters for hot gases.
