610,308. Heat treatment furnaces. BIRLEC, Ltd., (formerly Birmingham Electric Furnaces, Ltd.), and LOBLEY, A. G. May 16, 1944, No. 9341. [Class 51 (ii)] In a heat treatment furnace provided with heat radiating combustion tubes, the fuel supplied to the burners of certain or all of the tubes is incompletely burnt and the products of incomplete combustion from the tubes, after cooling and the removal of undesirable constituents are fed to the treatment chamber for use as a protective atmosphere. Figs. 1 and 2 show a continuous furnace having heat radiating combustion tubes 2 arranged above and below the conveyer 17. Tubes 2 may be supplied with a regulable fuel and air mixture from a mixer 3 to heat the charge and tubes 8 for producing the furnace atmosphere are supplied with fuel and air continuously from a mixer 9. The gases are led to a cooler 14, drier 15 and purifier 16 and thence to openings 18 leading to the treatment chamber. The atmosphere producing tubes are lined with sillimanite or other suitable refractory substance. Electric heating elements may be employed in place of the tubes 2.
