Abstract

143,602. Davies, W. E. Feb. 21, 1919. Retorts; coke ovens.-Gases are withdrawn from retorts and coke-ovens by means of an arrangement of flues similar to that described in Specification 131,105. The vertical tubes 3, Fig. 1<a>, which connect with a horizontal collecting- flue, may be straight, tapered, or stepped in form. The perforations 7, 8 through which the gases pass may be formed through the body of the brick, or along the edges of adjacent bricks. In a modification, the space enclosed by the inner walls 13, 14 of adjacent ovens is subdivided by partitions 17 into flues 11, 12 which receive the gases through perforations 15, 16. The application to retorts used in the synthetic production of ammonia is mentioned.
