Abstract
442,918. Vertical retorts for destructive distillation. WEST, F. J., WEST, E., and WEST'S GAS IMPROVEMENT CO., Ltd., Albion Ironworks, Miles Platting, Manchester. Nov. 15, 1934, No. 32881. Addition to 408,738. [Classes 51 (ii) and 55 (i)) In a vertical retort according to the parent Specification the central combustion chamber a is unidivided and the annular discharge door p carries a fireclay ring n which extends up into the carbonization space b well above the level of the combustion chamber floor, this latter provision rendering the supply of a basic layer of coke breeze unnecessary. The ring n is built up of arcuate sections which are formed with co-operating projections and recesses r, Fig. 5, so that alternate sections, secured by bolts q to the door p, retain the intermediate-sections in position. Effective joints at the lower end of the space b are obtained by the provision of inner and outer spring rings s, t, Fig. 4. The wall c of the combustion chamber a is constructed of interlocking bricks, while the floor e is formed with pairs of gas and air ports i, j supplied respectively through a central duct hand damper-controlled outer passages f.
