Abstract
254,697. Plassmann, J. June 30, 1925, [Convention date]. Retort and like furnaces; roasting- furnaces. - The low temperature carbonizing - apparatus described in Specification 240,800 is modified by building the annular heating chambers or cells of segments of refractory material. This construction allows higher temperatures to be employed, so that apparatus can be, used for the production of coke and for roasting ores. As shown the heating- structure is built up of a number of superposed rings of segments 2, which are so shaped and formed that the assembled structure provides a central space or combustion shaft 5. and two series of vertical flues 3, 4 connected by tortuous passages formed in the segments as shown in Fig. 2. The heating-gases from the shaft 5 pass through openings 7 to the flues 4, which are closed at their lower ends, and thence through the tortuous passages to the flues 3. The radial joints between the segments are staggered so that in adjacent rings the circumferential flow of the heating-gases is in opposite direction, as indicated in the left and right hand halves of Fig. 2. The flues 3 discharge at their lower ends into an annular space 8, from which the gases either pass to an exhaust flue or are returned as indicated by the arrows for recirculation through the flues. A mass of heat-equalizing brickwork 6 mav be fitted in the shaft 5. The apparatus may be modified so that the material is charged into the heating-chambers from the middle instead of from the outside as in Specification 240,800.
