Charging.-To prevent caking of the charge in the upper part of a vertical retort the fuel is fed through a tube d arranged in the. mouth of the retort and extending downwards to the zone of maximum temperature. The mouth of the retort is preferably enlarged, as shown, and the annular passage c between the tube d and the walls serves for the withdrawal of gas. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 16497/03.
