Abstract

469,607. Coking process and apparatus. GRIGGS, A. R. Dec. 28, 1935, No. 35904. [Class 55 (i)] Coke or semi-coke is obtained by passing down wardly through a stationary coal charge hot combustionproductswhich are mixed previous to contact with the coal, in a chamber in direct con tinuation with the combustion chamber, with such an amount of gas as will prevent overheating of the coal by reducing the temperature of the contact gases. Gas and air are fed by a burner d to an annular combustion chamber b from which the hot gases pass to a mixing chamber c to which gas is supplied by a nozzle e at the junction of the chambers, the attemperated gases entering the carbonizing chamber a through tangential ports f, and passing downwardly through the charge; t, t, represent suitable positions for the thermostat controlling the secondary gas supply. In a modification, the mixing chamber c is dispensed with and replaced by the space in the upper part of the carbonizing chamber a.
