Abstract

219,865. Moore, S., and Hunter, C. Jan. 31, 1923. Charging.-In apparatus for the manufacture of gas comprising an externally-heated vertical retort B, which opens at its lower end into a water gas generator D, the charge is fed to the retort in a number of inwardly and downwardly directed streams at points below its top, so that a clear space or zone G is left in the upper part of the retort, and the larger portions of fuel form a relatively porous column at the middle of the retort, while the smaller fuel collects near the walls. As shown the charge is supplied from double hoppers F through inclined shoots E spaced around the retort, the feed from the upper hopper being controlled by a bell operated by bevel gearing.
