Abstract
Sponge iron is obtained by heating a mixture of ore and less than 25 per cent of its weight of pure carbon for several hours in the retorts of a regenerative coke oven. Reducing gas is introduced into the retorts during the latter part of the reduction in order to remove oxygen completely, and the sponge iron is removed in a horizontal direction by means of a box-like ladle or by pushing it into a receptacle adapted to protect it from atmospheric oxidation. A reducing temperature of 1000 DEG C. or above is specified. The charge is heated by combustion of gas in adjacent chambers, and the gas for reduction may be wholly or partly produced in the retorts.
