Abstract
<PICT:0350124/III/1> In the formation of sulphur from gases containing sulphur dioxide, such as furnace gases or those from the roasting of sulphur ores, by passing these gases, preheated at 300-800 DEG C., into contact with heated coke &c. at a temperature of at least 1000 DEG C. with the formation of carbon monoxide and dioxide, the monoxide is converted to dioxide by the addition to the outgoing gases of secondary gases containing free oxygen which may be preheat d, the amount of oxygen being insufficient to combine with all the monoxide present; the heat thus generated is returned directly or indirectly to the reaction zone. Should the original gases contain free oxygen, these may be employed as the secondary gases, care being taken that the monoxide remains in slight excess. In the apparatus shown, a shaft furnace A, in which coke is maintained at the level L, is provided with annular flues l, m. The sulphur dioxide containing gases enter at D and pass into the flues l, m by ports x, y, secondary air being supplied by pipes o, p, the heat generated serving to maintain the temperature of the coke bed. The final gases leave by a flue E and may serve for preheating purposes. An example is given and Specification 328,643, [Class 55 (i), Coking &c.], is referred to.
