Abstract

In a blast furnace, applicable for the manufacture of carbides, particularly of calcium and aluminium, and also for the production of phosphorus from phosphates, of the kind in which the blast contains a high percentage of oxygen and the top gas, after conversion of the carbon dioxide to carbon monoxide, is returned to the furnace, the returned carbon monoxide is divided into two unequal parts, of which the smaller part is fed, either cold or preheated, to the hearth, and the larger part is delivered, after considerable preheating, to the shaft at one or more points.ALSO:In a blast furnace, of the kind in which the blast contains a high percentage of oxygen and the top-gas, after conversion of the carbon dioxide to carbon monoxide, is returned to the furnace, the returned carbon monoxide is divided into two unequal parts, of which the smaller part is fed, either cold or preheated, to the hearth, and the larger part is delivered, after considerable preheating, to the shaft at one or more points.
