Refining.-In making steel in a Siemens- Martin furnace, dust from coal poor in gas, coke, semi-coke, or poor coal, is introduced into the furnace at least from the termination of the refining stage in such a manner that it forms a protective layer over the bath. The coal dust may be introduced into the furnace mixed with combustion gas or may be blown into a stream of blast furnace gas by means of blast furnace; and the furnace may be fitted with a coal dust combustion chamber, or a coal dust combustion chamber mav be constructed as an auxiliarv combustion chamber to a blast furnace gas combustion chamber. The coal dust may be used along with gas from a tapping generator operated without steam and employing coke or semi-coke or like coal poor in gas. The excess heat of the Siemens-Martin furnace may be used for preheating the air of such a tapping generator. The coal dust may be blown in in such a manner that the protective layer is formed between the gas current and the bath, and in such a manner as to fill the corners with which the gas current does not come into complete contact. During the refining stage coal dust may be blown in along with air, and after the refining stage coal dust without air. In some cases coarse coal dust may be used along with fine coal dust.
